Amidst the turbulent financial times many are experiencing, a group of dynamic ladies is still working hard to help others in distress.
Under the leadership of President Sheryl Nelson, the women of Rho Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held a fundraiser enabling them to fund their scholarship program and many other service projects. The event, entitled “Pink Chic,” was held at the Pikesville Fire Hall on October 3, 2009.
“We do everything we possibly can to help others during these stressful times,” said Nelson.
The event captured the essence of an “old-fashioned cabaret” with food and libations of all kinds. Many of the guests enjoyed going from table to table sharing many delectable treats. On the dance floor, the ladies performed new waves of line dances for guests. Raffles were also held throughout the evening as thank you gifts.
“It is always a pleasure rallying with Sorors, family and friends, to raise much needed funds; especially in these difficult times.” said Judge C. Yvonne Holt-Stone, the first President of Rho Xi Omega.
The “Party Walk,” a big hit with AKAs, helped teach steps to all who showed interest. Also, blinking bracelets, pins and drinking glasses added to the ambience.
“I have not had so much fun dancing and partying in ages!” said Donnella Taylor, a guest at the event.
“This is the quintessential party - old school and new school mixed,” said
another guest, Ken Tillery. “I’ll be here next year for sure!”
The event was successful because of a hard-working committee, which was co-chaired by Shawn Millin-Hagood and LaKesha Coleman. Although the final report was not available by press time, several thousand dollars was raised for the chapter’s service initiatives.
Rho Xi Omega was chartered in 1988. During their 21-year history, they have served the public tirelessly and consistently, and have provided service throughout communities in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. The chapter puts great emphasis on scholarships for higher education, the plight of today’s African-American males, the health and welfare of children, the disabled, the indigent and the elderly.
The chapter annually awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, who plan to matriculate in colleges and universities throughout the country. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony is a part of the chapter’s annual Greek Step Show, which is held in May of each year.
Rho Xi Omega’s most recent service project was a clothing campaign. They donated suits, dresses and purses to The Dressing Room, a program designed to prepare women for success in the workforce. Their goal was to obtain 101 suits - one for every year of the sorority’s illustrious history - however, they overwhelmingly exceeded that number.
Rho Xi Omega’s next major service opportunity will be on November 21 when they will provide a full day of service on their annual “Project H.O.P.E. Day!” H.O.P.E. stands for “Helping Other People Excel.” All members of Alpha Kappa Alpha in the North Atlantic region will participate in the region-wide project. The North Atlantic region covers all states from Washington, D.C. to Maine.
The Chapter often partners with other organizations to enhance their efforts in the community. Therefore, if you would like more information about Project H.O.P.E. and the many other service projects of this group, please visit http://www.rhoxiomega1988.org.
