— I love to see students doing good things in the community! This week’s students of the week are the young ladies of Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women. The school’s mission is to prepare the young women of Baltimore city for success in college and life. Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW), engages students in learning through a strong school culture and innovative teaching practice that nurtures the development of the whole young woman: emotionally, physically and academically. BLSYW cultivates strong habits of mind and a sense of community responsibility.

Recently BLSYW participated in the Days of Giving Back Program. According to Principal Brenda Hamm, “We are a community made up of adults and students who have big hearts and want to give to others. Because of this and because I strongly believe in the transformative power of giving to others by doing for others it became my dream to create opportunities for our entire school community to give back to our city of Baltimore.”

BLSYW volunteered at various locations this year including the Brightview Retirement Community and The Baltimore Station. Cori Granger, a junior, said her work at the Baltimore Station reminded her how veterans sacrifice for their country. “I’m glad I got to participate,” she said. “It makes me realize that we should be grateful for veterans. They risk their lives for us and have to live in a shelter. It made me feel grateful and happy to help them.

Eighth grade team leader Dana Collins said the students also benefited from their time at the Brightview Retirement Community. “At first the girls were nervous about interacting with the residents,” she said. “By the end of the day, we were all sitting in the living room chatting like old friends.”

The Baltimore Times salutes the students and staff of The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women.
