Indie Soul Student of the Week: Mylia Williams
Phinesse Demps | 5/2/2014, 6 a.m.
BALTIMORE Mylia Williams has been a member of the Lady Sabers volleyball team for the past three years. She plays volleyball and softball at The SEED School of Maryland, currently holding a 3.3 GPA. Mylia was instrumental in helping the Lady Sabers win the 2013 – 2014 Baltimore Middle School Volleyball League (BMSVL) Championship. Her coach, Nia Foggy, describes her as one of the most aggressive players on the court. Mylia is a strong server and is not intimidated by the competition. She averages eight points a game.
Phinesse Demps: What have you learned while playing volleyball at The SEED School of Maryland?
Mylia Williams: Teamwork! It takes more than one person to get the ball over the net. The team’s success is dependent on group effort and it pushes us to help each other.
PD: What is the best part of playing on the SEED MD volleyball team?
MW: Winning! This is our third year winning the league championship. This year we had a rough start and did not do well in the first few matches. Once we started playing as a team and encouraging each other, we got better.
PD: How has playing volleyball at SEED MD helped you?
MW: To be an athlete at The SEED School of MD I have to keep a 3.0 grade point average or better. Playing sports comes easy, but I have to put a lot of work in to keep my grades up. I pay attention in class, take notes, go to study hall and partner with a study buddy. It is worth it because I stay in shape and I stay eligible to play.”
Congratulations to Mylia Williams for being the Indie Soul Student of the Week.
