BALTIMORE After 28 years as head basketball coach at Coppin State University, Fang Mitchell’s contract was not renewed. After a search for a new coach, Michael Grant, who is known for academics and winning was hired.
“What I liked about the Coppin State job was that academics is a must here for all students, especially those that play sports and I love that about Coppin State. They truly do care about education and that is something that I strive to do is make sure my players are not only prepared for the court but off of it as well” says Coach Grant.
Grant last coached at Division II Stillman College where they had a 18-10 record. Stillman College Tigers lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in assists, blocked shots and three-point shooting.
Grant says his plans for Coppin are simple, education comes first. “We will continue to make sure it is about academics first, so that they [student-athlete] graduate. At the same time we are going to win games, play smart basketball and look to score. No one wants to come to a boring game with the score being in the 50s and 60s. Lastly, we have to recruit from the area. There is some great talent in the Baltimore area. We have not recruited a player from the area since early 2000. We have to change that. We have to connect with the city and we want the community to support Coppin State,” said Coach Grant.
