A new exhibit, “Paper Paintings: Recent Works by Teddy Johnson” is on display at Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower on Friday, January 15 through Saturday, February 27, 2016. A free opening reception takes place Friday, January 15, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30pm where guests will have the opportunity to view the exhibition, meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments. Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower is managed by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and is located at 21 S. Eutaw Street in Baltimore.

For Teddy Johnson, painting is a way to find a personal center in a place where present, past, and future co-mingle. Painting acts for him as a mechanism to process and meditate on systems and to respond to immediate and far-flung surroundings. It is also way to imagine, construct, and recollect. History and human experience are ongoing themes in Johnson’s work. In his series “Paper Paintings,” newspapers, images from art history books, Xeroxes, digital printouts, receipts, post-it notes, envelopes, printer paper, and memos are the raw materials of his assemblages, which Teddy observes and interprets through oil paint and brush. In these works, compositions of ephemera and everyday detritus jumble and layer about the picture plane, alternately revealing and obscuring.

Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests have an opportunity to view artwork throughout the building, including 15 floors of working artist studios and special exhibits. Visitors can also learn more about the historical building and participate in a tour of the clock room ($5).
