Queen Elizabeth II Dies, Charles Becomes New King

Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, according to an announcement provided by Buckingham palace officials. The longest reigning monarch in Britain’s history ruled on the throne for 70 years. The 96-year-old inspired an outpouring of tributes across the globe. The Eiffel Tower’s lights in France were extinguished in her honor after the Queen passed away.  Flags were flown at half-mast from the top of the White House to Buckingham Palace. The matriarch’s death inspired collective mourning.

As the world says goodbye to the Queen, a new era is ushered in by 73-year-old King Charles III. The new monarch’s wife, Camilla—who is currently known as the Duchess of Cornwall— will become the Queen Consort.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” King Charles III said in a statement. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.  I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

King Charles III also said that his wish is for a royal mourning period to be observed “until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral.”  A funeral date had not yet been confirmed. King Charles III further advised that royal residences would close until Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral has been held.

The Daily Mail reported that well-wishers “flocked to iconic royal landmarks” to provide tributes to The Queen in Britain.

“Many left handwritten messages addressed to ‘Your Majesty’ and ‘Our Queen’ thanking her for her dedication and selfless service during her extraordinary 70 years on the throne,” per The Daily Mail’s report.

Amid the sadness expressed by Queen Elizabeth II’s admirers, a new line of succession will occur beyond Britain’s King Charles III, and the new Queen Consort.

“Queen Elizabeth II said publicly that it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla should be known as “Queen Consort” after her son succeeded her, answering questions once and for all about her status in the Royal Family,” AP News reported.

The King was once married to Diana, the late Princess of Wales. The couple divorced. Their son, William, will become the new Prince of Wales. Kate Middleton, who is married to William, will be the new Princess of Wales. She will follow in Diana’s royal footsteps.
