RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State softball team (11-13-1, 3-3 CIAA) closed out the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up Sunday afternoon with a pair of wins at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Bulldogs earned a 10-5 win over Winston-Salem State in game one, followed by a 21-4 frame over Saint Augustine’s in game two.

Bulldogs Close Out CIAA Round-Up with Two Wins

Game One: Bowie State (10), Winston-Salem State (5)

The game was highlighted by six runs for the Bulldogs in the bottom third, followed by a pair of runs in the fourth including a home run for freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) that provided BSU with a 9-0 run heading into the fifth inning over WSSU. The Rams found life when Alleshia Pullen responded with a home run of her own that led to WSSU adding three runs to cut the deficit 9-3.

BSU scored one run in the fifth before holding the Rams to a run in both the sixth and seventh for the seven-inning victory. Freshman Alyssa Cloutier (Derwood, MD) went 2-for-3 and two runs scored while graduate senior Evelyn Buehlman (Ellicott City, MD) earned her fifth win on the year in the circle, allowing one hit, striking out six in four innings of work.

Game Two: Bowie State (21), St. Augustine’s (4)

Bowie State wasted no time cracking the scoreboard against the Lady Falcons, tallying four runs to take a 4-1 lead after one. The Bulldogs then racked up six more runs in the fourth, four in the fourth, and a game-high seven in the fifth to run away with the five-run rule victory.

Collectively, BSU registered 17 hits as senior Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, MD) and Jones went 3-of-5 at the plate. Gordon finished with four RBIs as well as graduate senior Aseyah Alexander (Silver Springs, MD) also recorded four RBIs on 2-of-3 hitting.

Freshman Karen Fritzges (Baltimore, MD) earned her first win of the season, striking out six of the 25 batters faced in five innings.

Bowie State will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 30 with a home doubleheader against Frostburg State. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the BSU Softball Field.
