Mason Punches Ticket to NCAA Tournament; Finished 2nd at MAC Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. – Redshirt senior Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year after taking second at the 2023 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Wrestling Championships, Saturday evening.


The Huskies finished 12th with 20.5 team points. Mason faced off against Seth Koleno of Clarion for the title match at 141 pounds. Mason got out to an early lead with a takedown in the first period and built just over two minutes of riding time.

Koleno forced a stall by Mason and after a scoreless second period, Koleno got an escape in the third to cut the lead in half. Koleno closed out the match with a takedown with 31 seconds remaining after a gritty match from both wrestlers. Mason best the winner of the third-place match negating a need for a true-second place match. He claimed second place for the second-straight year in the MAC championships and will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the NCAA Championships.

Redshirt junior Shane Noonan (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) wrestled in the consolation bracket at 285 pounds and fall to David Szuba of Rider by a pin at 0:46. Noonan finished eighth overall after taking a medical forfeit in the 7th/8th place match. Mason will head to the NCAA Tournament beginning on March 16 in Tulsa, Okla. Tournament brackets and seeds will be available closer to the championships and a full preview will be available once brackets are released.
