Bulldogs Never Trail in 7-5 Win, Completes Sweep over Chestnut Hill


BOWIE, Md. —The Bowie State Bulldogs took a 5-4 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 7-5 victory, completing the sweep over the visiting Chestnut Hill Griffins on Saturday at the BSU Softball Field.


Sophomore Karen Fritzges (4-1) got the win for Bowie State (12-8). The right-hander went three innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on one hit, allowing three walks and striking out one. Sophomore Lindsey George started the ballgame and went two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out two.


Senior Shanya Gordon led the way offensively for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI. Junior Taylor Skinner provided a noteworthy effort as well, going 0-for-3 with three RBI. George also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Bowie State with two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs were trailing 4-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Bowie State’s offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run error off the bat of Skinner.

The Bulldogs then held the Griffins scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Freshman Sydney Edmond came across to score the lone run of the inning for Bowie State, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Bowie State held Chestnut Hill without a run before building their lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Gordon. Chestnut Hill put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Bowie State still held on for the 7-5 win.

GAME NOTES
» Bowie State’s highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed five runs across.
» BSU took a 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn’t surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Griffins at a 6-3 clip.
» George stole two bases in Saturday’s game.
» The Bulldogs swiped five bases as a team.
» BSU pitchers limited Chestnut Hill to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
» Bowie State pitchers faced 32 Chestnut Hill hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out three.
» The Bulldogs drew five walks from Chestnut Hill pitching.
» Gordon led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
» Chestnut Hill was led offensively by freshman Abbie Alt-Am, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
» Alt-Am led the Griffins pitching staff, throwing 4.1 innings of one-run ball.
