RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University built as much as a 19-point first-half lead and went on to take a 90-79 victory over the Benedict College Tigers in a non-conference men’s basketball game in their final game of 2022.

Benedict falls to 4-6 on the season. Shaw improves to 6-7.
The Tigers cut the lead to 18-12 on a Gob Gabriel layup with 11:35 left in the first half. The Bears went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to build a 33-14 lead. Benedict was able to trim the lead to 42-37 at the half after Calvin McCutcheon hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Benedict went on a 10-0 run in the second half to cut Shaw’s 15-point lead to five points, 71-66, with 5:41 left to play, but the Tigers couldn’t get any closer. Two free throws by Gabriel made it 77-70 with 4:07 remaining, but the Bears hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 10 points.
Gabriel led the Tigers with 21 points. McCutcheon added 15 points, as did Tim Moore. Asanti Price, in his second game of the season, had 10 points.
Benedict returns to action on Jan. 2, 2023, with a home game against Spring Hill College at 7:30 p.m.
