LEXINGTON, Va. |Mercyline Kimaiyo continued her strong start during the indoor track and field season as she won the 5000m to highlight the Norfolk State University women’s track and field team during the Winter Classic, hosted by VMI on Friday and Saturday.
Kimaiyo, who won the 1 mile on Jan. 14 at the HBCU Showcase, won Saturday’s 5000m event by three seconds, finishing with a time of 17:53.93. In addition, she placed ninth in the 1-mile, logging a time of 5:19.33.
In the 60m hurdles, Brooklyn Robinson matched her preliminary time and placed third at 8.93, while Tamesia Pinnix finished eight at 9.28. Robinson clocked 8.93 and 8.94 in the two preliminaries, while Pinnix registered times of 8.99 and 8.90 in the two events before reaching the finals.
In the weight throw, Arieana Parker placed second, with a toss of 17.47m.
Tynniesia Wilson claimed the sixth spot in the high jump, leaping 1.55m, while Robinson finished tied for 11th at 1.50m.
In the long jump, Indya Richardson finished fifth at 5.60m, while Shonte Seale (5.36m), Jada Venters (5.35m) and Corryn Conner (5.32m) placed eighth through 10th, respectively.
Norfolk State returns to action with the first of two meets at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The Spartans will compete on Friday, Feb. 3 at the East Coast Invitational, and follow that one week later at the Kenneth Giles Invitational (Feb. 10-11).
