Dr. Leslie King-Hammond has spent decades shaping how art is studied, curated and understood, particularly work by artists of color.

A curator, artist, art historian and cultural activist, King-Hammond was honored on March 28th with the Legacy Award at Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School’s fourth annual Women of the Movement celebration.

This year’s theme, “Arts in Motion: Voices of Change — She Moves, She Creates,” reflects the school’s focus on using the arts to support leadership, identity and social change among its students in grades 5 through 8. The event highlights the role of creative expression as a tool for empowerment and community engagement, particularly for young women.

King-Hammond is a former graduate dean and the founding director of the Center for Race and Culture at Maryland Institute College of Art. Over the course of her career, she has worked to expand recognition of Black artists and women in the arts, both in academic spaces and in the broader cultural landscape. Her work has helped bring greater visibility to artists whose contributions have been overlooked.

In addition to her leadership in higher education, King-Hammond has staged exhibitions, contributed to scholarship and mentored upcoming artists. Her approach commonly integrates art history to social and cultural context, fostering a greater comprehension of the narratives underlying each work.

Her contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the The Baltimore Sun Hall of Fame and the Alain Locke International Prize. A gallery in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District is also dedicated in her name.

Throughout her career, King-Hammond has emphasized mentorship and advocacy, supporting artists whose work has often been overlooked and helping to create opportunities for future generations.

The Women of the Movement celebration recognized three women whose work exemplify creativity, persistence and growth. King-Hammond’s selection for the Legacy Award demonstrates a career characterized by persistent dedication to and investment in the arts, alongside her contributions to academic and artistic practice. Her work continues to inspire both established artists and the next generation of creative voices.
