Baltimore’s vibrant arts and culture scene is getting a flavorful boost this spring, as Artscape prepares to spotlight the city’s culinary talent in a big way.
Create Baltimore has announced that applications are now open—extended through May 8—for chefs, culinary artists, and food storytellers to participate in the 2026 Flavor Lab, an immersive food experience set to take place during Memorial Day weekend, May 23–24.
At the center of this year’s Flavor Lab is Baltimore native Catina Smith, known to many as Chef Cat, who will serve as curator and host of the Cooking Demo Stage. With more than 20 years of experience and national recognition from Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Cat brings both credibility and community connection to the role.
Located at Guilford and Pleasant Streets, the Flavor Lab will transform part of the festival into a dynamic culinary hub—where food meets art, storytelling, and culture. From live cooking demonstrations to interactive experiences, the space is designed to celebrate Baltimore’s rich and diverse food ecosystem.
“This is going to be an unforgettable celebration of the flavors that make this city so special,” said Smith. “Baltimore has an incredibly talented culinary community, and I’ve had the privilege of experiencing these chefs’ food firsthand.”
Beyond the stage, Chef Cat’s impact on Baltimore’s food scene runs deep. As co-founder of Our Time Kitchen—a shared-use commissary kitchen supporting local entrepreneurs—and founder of the upcoming Cherry Street Diner, she has consistently created pathways for others in the industry to grow and thrive.
For Create Baltimore, the Flavor Lab represents more than just a festival feature—it’s an intentional investment in creative opportunity.
“Artscape is about generating real opportunity for creatives while making culture accessible and alive across our city,” said CEO Robyn Murphy. “Flavor Lab brings that to life in a way that feels distinctly Baltimore—bold, layered, and rooted in our identity.”
Participants selected for the Cooking Demo Experience will have the chance to showcase their craft in front of thousands at what is widely recognized as the nation’s largest free outdoor arts festival. It’s a rare platform for emerging and established culinary voices alike to share not just food, but the stories behind it.
Applications are open now and must be submitted by May 8 at: artscape.org/artscape-applications
As Baltimore continues to celebrate creativity across disciplines, this year’s Flavor Lab is a reminder that the city’s story isn’t just painted on canvases or performed on stages—it’s also plated, seasoned, and shared one dish at a time.
