Families across the region are invited to take part in an evening of inclusion, education, and fun at a special Sensory-Friendly Family Swim Night hosted by Goldfish Swim School Columbia. The free community event will take place on Sunday, April 19, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., offering a welcoming environment tailored for children with sensory sensitivities.
Designed with care and accessibility in mind, the event will feature a calming atmosphere with dimmed lighting, reduced music volume, and sensory-friendly swim toys such as textured balls, foam noodles, and pop-its. The goal is to create a safe and enjoyable space where all children, including those on the autism spectrum, can engage comfortably in water activities.
A highlight of the evening will be a live reading by local mom and author Ebony Crawford-Sealy, who will share excerpts from her children’s book What Makes Me Awesome: An Autism Acceptance Story. Inspired by her son Xavier, a participant in the school’s Golden Learners program, the book celebrates individuality, confidence, and the beauty of being different.
During the event, Crawford-Sealy will also speak about her experience as a Goldfish mom and the importance of inclusive spaces that support children of all abilities. Her story and book aim to spark meaningful conversations around acceptance, empathy, and self-worth for children and families alike.
In addition to the reading, attendees will benefit from an important water safety presentation. This component is especially critical, as research shows that children on the autism spectrum face a significantly higher risk of drowning compared to their peers. Through interactive water safety stations, families will learn essential skills in an engaging and supportive setting.
The event will also include added incentives and family-friendly activities. Current members of Goldfish Swim School Columbia will receive a $50 tuition credit for each non-member they refer who enrolls in weekly lessons by the end of the event. All attendees—both members and new families—will have the opportunity to participate in raffles featuring prizes such as a free month of sensory swim events, a snack shack card, goggles, and a towel.
Guests can also enjoy snacks and a lively, welcoming atmosphere designed to make every family feel included and supported.
What Makes Me Awesome extends beyond storytelling by offering educational tools such as a child-friendly glossary, reflection prompts, and guided discussion questions for families, educators, and caregivers. These resources support ongoing conversations about identity, inclusion, and emotional development.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required to attend.
By combining recreation, education, and community connection, this sensory-friendly swim night reflects a growing commitment to inclusive programming—ensuring that every child has the opportunity to feel safe, celebrated, and empowered.
