BALTIMORE — Lyric Baltimore is inviting the city to lift its collective voice during “Freedom Songs,” a free, immersive community singing experience led by internationally acclaimed vocalist and cultural educator Navasha Daya. The event will take place Wednesday, March 11th at 7 p.m. in the Lyric’s grand lobby, transforming the historic space into a gathering ground for healing, reflection, and shared sound. Free tickets are available at www.lyricbaltimore.com.

More than a concert, Freedom Songs reimagines performance as participation. Audience members are invited to become an active chorus, engaging in clapping, movement, and collective vocalization rooted in the oral traditions that have long served as tools for liberation, resilience, and connection. Designed for seasoned vocalists and first-time singers alike, the experience centers the voice as a communal instrument—one that strengthens bonds and sparks collective energy.

“As we ponder the word freedom, let us all be reminded of the words of Maya Angelou: ‘The truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free,’” said Ebony Evans, Deputy Director of Lyric Education. “I invite you to experience the healing power of communal singing and the intrinsic power of the oral tradition. Freedom Songs is not just a moment—it’s a movement, a reminder, and a conduit for change. Navasha Daya is a world-class performing artist, music educator, and cultural arts activist, and we couldn’t have collaborated with an artist more aligned with the mission of Lyric Education: to support and empower the voice, agency, and creativity of Greater Baltimore youth while delivering high-quality arts education programs.”

The evening also serves as a prelude to Lyric Baltimore’s 2026 Dream BIG Contest, which this year honors the wisdom and legacy of Harriet Tubman while celebrating the brilliance of Greater Baltimore’s youth. By lifting up freedom songs rooted in struggle, hope, and collective action, the program encourages participants of all ages to dream boldly and find their place in the ongoing chorus of progress.

“In today’s challenging climate, it is vital to create as many opportunities as possible for fostering unity, courage, and hope,” said Daya. “Historically, freedom songs have been the backbone of liberation movements, promoting collective healing and justice. As we unite in song, may we manifest a healing balm that encourages and supports everyone in transforming our society, engaging in some ‘good trouble,’ and redeeming our shared humanity.”
