The Arc Baltimore has presented its 2023 Community Connection Award to Dyara Williams for her work in demonstrating The Arc’s values – unity, innovation, excellence, and integrity.
The Community Connection Award is presented annually to The Arc Baltimore staff person who fosters opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to develop valuable relationships and integrate into their community in an attempt to significantly improve their quality of life. The award was established in memory of Selma Greenfeld, who was supported by The Arc and known for her warm personality, sense of humor, and many friendships.
“As the house manager at the Meadowland house, Dyara does whatever it takes,” says Kathleen Durkin, The Arc Baltimore’s Chief Executive Officer.
In a planned return to the Dundalk Day Program after staying at home during the worst of Covid, a gentleman Dyara supports was excited to go back but needed a newly prescribed medication. As a certified medical technician, Dyara drove to the program daily to administer it so he could attend. She also accompanies him to his medical appointments and brings back key information so the team can manage his supports at this stage of his life.
The Community Connection Award was presented during The Arc Baltimore’s recent Annual Meeting and Awards Reception. The event honors individuals who have gone “above and beyond” in their service to the organization and the people with developmental disabilities who are recipients of its programs and services.
“The Annual Meeting is our opportunity to honor all those who have given so much of themselves to the mission of The Arc Baltimore, from community partners and volunteers to supported individuals, staff members, and other heroes of the organization,” says Durkin. “It is their hard work that is at the very heart of our vision for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independently, work in meaningful jobs, and enjoy friendships and activities in the community.”
As in past years, the 2023 Annual Meeting and Awards Reception featured a number of recognitions, as well as the election of The Arc Baltimore’s new board of directors and officers.
