Baltimore, MD – September 12, 2024 – Baltimore, MD – Building STEPS, a Baltimore-based nonprofit dedicated to propelling under-resourced Baltimore City students to college and career success, proudly announces the milestone of its 25th cohort. Over the past quarter-century, Building STEPS has significantly narrowed the achievement gap for hundreds of students, equipping them to excel as young professionals in the workforce. In fact, Building STEPS graduates are ten times more likely to earn a college degree than their non-Building STEPS classmates, a testament to the program’s life-changing impact.

Since its inception, Building STEPS has pioneered a comprehensive, multi-year approach to student development, beginning in the 11th grade. This STEM-focused program provides students with career exposure through internships and real-world experiences, while also offering nuanced college admissions and financial aid guidance. Building STEPS extends its commitment beyond college admissions, providing ongoing mentorship, support, and career development to ensure students transition smoothly from “backpack to briefcase.”

This holistic approach has proven remarkably effective. Building STEPS has supported nearly 1,000 students through their academic journeys, with hundreds of alumni now thriving in professional careers across the STEM fields and beyond. Many of these graduates have returned to their communities, contributing their expertise and enhancing the vibrancy of Baltimore and its surrounding areas.

In reflecting on the organization’s growth, Debra Hettleman, CEO of Building STEPS, emphasized the transformative power of the initiative: “What began as an idea to level the playing field for under-resourced students interested in science and technology has become a force multiplier for guiding students toward their potential and creating lasting generational impact. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but even more excited about the future as we continue to expand our reach and impact.”

As Building STEPS looks to the future, the organization plans to grow its partnerships with local businesses, academic institutions, and community leaders, ensuring that even more Baltimore City students are prepared to succeed in college and build meaningful careers. In an era where diversity in STEM fields is critical, Building STEPS is not just helping students achieve their individual goals—it’s shaping the future workforce and promoting equity in industries that will drive the next wave of innovation.
