Dear Baltimore Times Family,

For 40 years, The Baltimore Times has told the stories others overlooked. We have celebrated Black excellence when it wasn’t trending, uplifted faith communities and entrepreneurs, highlighted families and students, and reflected Black Baltimore with dignity, pride, and joy. And through it all, we have never asked our community to pay to see itself.

We believe something simple but powerful: If it matters to our community, it should be free to our community.

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are launching a 90-day campaign to raise $40,000 to ensure The Baltimore Times remains free and accessible for the next generation. This campaign is not simply about revenue. It is about protecting access, protecting voice, and protecting legacy.

In an era when more and more news is locked behind subscriptions and paywalls, we have chosen community over exclusivity. We believe that access to positive, community-centered journalism should never be limited by the ability to pay. For four decades, we have stood by that commitment. Now we are asking you to help us protect it.

Since 2005, Maryland has lost 70% of its newspapers

The State of Local News (2025)

The Baltimore Times is more than a newspaper. It is a mirror for the community, a platform for Black achievement, a trusted source of good news, and a record of resilience and progress. Keeping it free ensures that the grandmother who picks it up every week can continue to access it, that the young entrepreneur can see possibility in its pages, and that the next generation can see themselves reflected without a price tag.

We cannot let 40 years of impact end with a paywall.

Our campaign — $40K for Our 40th — calls on readers, businesses, churches, alumni, and community leaders to honor the past and fund the future. We invite you to give $40 for 40 years, consider a gift of $400 or $4,000, or contribute at a level that is meaningful to you. This effort is about broad-based community ownership, not reliance on a few large donors. This is our paper.

For forty years, you have trusted us with your stories. If The Baltimore Times has informed you, inspired you, celebrated someone you love, or reflected your community with pride, we ask you to invest in its future today.

Forty years strong. Funded by the community. Free for the community.

With gratitude,
