Strathmore and Blackrock Center for the Arts Explore Quilting and Recycling

Two exhibitions will be on view at each venue beginning September 2022

GERMANTOWN/NORTH BETHESDA, MD.—Black Rock Center for the Arts and Strathmore announce two concurrent group exhibitions presented by Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). UPCYCLE! will be on view at BlackRock Center for the Arts beginning September 17, and PURPOSE-REPURPOSE! will be presented at the Mansion at Strathmore starting September 6. The exhibitions utilize a variety of reused and recycled materials repurposed for the art of quilting. While UPCYCLE! offered features works from artists all over the world, PURPOSE/REPURPOSE! is a regionally focused exhibition.

ABOUT UPCYCLE!

Repurposing used materials is one of the most effective solutions there is to deal with today’s environmentally devastating waste issues. Upcycle! offers artwork with intriguing details and unusual materials.

“Fiber art also has a rich tradition of incorporating elements that would otherwise be discarded and turning them into compelling compositions,” said Exhibition Juror Katie Pasquini Masopust.

UPCYCLE! artists are Susan Avishai, Kathleen Bagioni, Karen M. Balos, Sara Bradshaw, Laurie Bucher, Betty Busby, Shin-hee Chin, Yael David-Cohen, Heidi Drahota, Bodil Gardner, Barbara Oliver Hartman, Paula M. Jolly, Patricia Kennedy-Zafred, Barbara D. ABOUT PURPOSE-REPURPOSE!

PURPOSE-REPURPOSE!, a tri-region exhibition, examines the rich tradition of incorporating elements that would otherwise be discarded and turning them into compelling compositions.

“I’ve been thinking about how pieces linger in the studio. Repurposing them gives them a new life, and me, a new challenge,” said Paula Kovarik, the exhibition’s juror.

PURPOSE-REPURPOSE! will be on view September 6-October 29, 2022 in the Mansion at Strathmore. The opening reception is Wednesday, September 14, 7-9pm. Strathmore.org/Exhibitions
