Bowie State Softball to Hold Women in Sports Forum Tuesday in Celebration of Homecoming and the 50th Year Anniversary of Title IX

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State softball program is excited to be hosting a Women in Sports Forum in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. sponsored by Andrews Federal Credit Union.
The event is one of many activities that will take place this week as the Bowie State University community welcomes back alumni, family, and friends for the 2022 Homecoming experience after the past two years were scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Head coach Edward Powell in conjunction with Bowie State athletic administrators, Rick Bryson and Brenda Gilmore spearheaded the event. The forum is free and open to the public.
“I wanted to put more focus on women’s sports, specifically women’s sports in HBCU’s and softball,” said Powell. “I think that it needs to be highlighted because the young ladies are very athletic and very strong academically and my goal was to really push softball, softball in the community, and softball at Bowie State University.”
The event will feature a reception for networking/meet and greet at 6 p.m., followed by the actual forum in the Student Center on campus.
“I believe in what softball gives to young ladies which is an opportunity and to me, the most important goal is that softball and or any other sport has allowed young ladies that have succeeded in athletics to pave a way for their academics.”
The list of panelists and facilitators includes women from all sections of the sports industry such as Tinaya Alexander of the Washington Spirit, Briana DuBose of Georgetown University and Brenda Gilmore of Prince George’s Tennis and Education Foundation, and Dr. Sarah Adewunmi of Howard University.
Following the Women in Sports Forum, the Bulldogs softball team and Howard University’s softball team will play in the HBCU Softball Classic game on Friday, Sept. 30. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Washington Nationals Baseball and Softball Academy (3675 Ely Pl SE, Washington, DC 20019).
