BALTIMORE — Baltimore-based nonprofit Innovative Initiatives Inc. is giving young people the opportunity to explore the world of technology through a hands-on STEM program that teaches participants how to build their own gaming computer.

The organization is launching a free eight-week course for youth ages 9–13 that will guide students through the process of assembling a gaming PC from scratch while learning the fundamentals of how computers work.

The program will run April 4 through May 23, meeting every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the organization’s headquarters in Baltimore. Participants will learn about computer hardware, install components themselves, and experience the satisfaction of bringing a machine to life.

By the end of the program, students will take home the completed computer they built, giving them both a powerful learning experience and a tool they can continue using.

Building Skills Through Hands-On Learning

The course is designed to introduce students to technology in an engaging and accessible way. Through guided instruction, participants will learn how different computer components work together, from processors and memory to graphics cards and storage.

In addition to technical knowledge, the program helps youth develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity, which are foundational for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Students will also have opportunities to connect with technology professionals who can share insight about working in the tech industry.

“At Innovative Initiatives Inc., we believe that access to technology isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity for everyone,” said James Mitchell, Founder and Executive Director of Innovative Initiatives Inc. “Our upcoming PC building course gives young people in Baltimore the chance to get hands-on with real hardware, understand how the technology they use every day actually works, and walk away with skills that open doors.”

Mitchell said the organization has worked intentionally to ensure students are able to continue learning even after the program ends.

“We have been working to provide each student the actual hardware so when they get home with it they still have that access,” he said. “The open house is an opportunity for the community to come see what we’re doing, ask questions, and be part of something that’s growing into a stronger, more digitally empowered Baltimore.”

He added that the nonprofit is already planning additional educational opportunities.

“We are currently designing more courses centered around AI, cybersecurity and innovative technologies that everyone can use,” Mitchell said. “We’d love to see everyone there.”

Open House Scheduled April 4

Families interested in learning more about the program are invited to attend an Open House on April 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Innovative Initiatives’ facility.

The open house will allow parents and students to meet instructors, learn more about the curriculum, and explore additional STEM education opportunities offered by the organization.
