For many Baltimore families, it would not feel like Christmas without trains. The hum of miniature locomotives, the glow of tiny streetlights, and the nostalgia of a tradition shared across generations are all part of the season’s magic. Nowhere is that spirit more alive than at the Baltimore City Fire Department’s Engine Company 45, also referred to as Baltimore Fire #45, home to one of the city’s most beloved holiday train gardens.
Marking its 70th anniversary, the Engine 45 Holiday Train Garden remains a free, family-friendly tradition that draws visitors from across Baltimore and far beyond. Since 1955, the Glen Avenue station has transformed each December into a miniature wonderland filled with model railroads, animated scenes, and local landmarks that capture the hearts of children and adults alike.
This indoor display is more than an exhibit. It is a community creation. Firefighters and neighborhood volunteers work together year-round to design, build, and maintain the elaborate layout. The result is a whimsical world of trains weaving through themed landscapes, iconic Baltimore sites, and fun nods to popular movies.
Visitors travel from Florida to New York to experience the magic, a testament to the enduring appeal of this Northwest Baltimore treasure.
As the exhibit celebrates seven decades of holiday joy, Engine Company 45 emphasizes the importance of sustaining the tradition. Contributions collected during the season help fund the construction and maintenance of next year’s display, ensuring this legacy continues for future generations.
The 70th Anniversary Train Garden opens Saturday, November 29th and runs through January 6th at 2700 Glen Ave.
Hours of Operation:
- Monday through Friday: 5 PM to 9 PM
