The 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc. brought warmth, elegance, and purpose to Columbus Gardens on Sunday, December 7, during their annual Holiday Scholarship Jazz Brunch. The event blended community, celebration, and fundraising—all dedicated to supporting Baltimore-area youth.

Rooted in the national mantra, “What They See Is What They’ll Be,” members of the 100 Black Men of Maryland embodied that message as they arrived in sharp black suits paired with their signature gold ties. Their presence served as a visual reminder of the organization’s mission: to mentor, guide, and inspire young people through positive role modeling and leadership.

Guests enjoyed a full buffet and the vibrant sounds of the Rob Reason Jazz Group, whose playlist spanned jazz standards, funk, disco, and R&B. The lively afternoon continued as attendees joined in line dances and participated in raffles and auctions, raising additional scholarship funds.

Chapter President James Vaughn offered remarks tracing the history and growth of 100 Black Men—from its founding to its expansion nationwide and even internationally, with chapters established in London. He also reflected on the Baltimore Chapter’s legacy, founded in 1991, and the presence of several charter members in the room. Addressing membership, Vaughn noted the organization’s goal to grow its impact, stating, “Although the name is 100 Black Men… we have fewer than 100 members and are looking to add more to the roster.”

Event Co-chair Jonathan Diggs expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s support. “The 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc.’s Holiday Scholarship Jazz Brunch was a huge success. We received tremendous support from the community. Proceeds from the brunch will go towards giving scholarships to deserving youth in the Baltimore area. It warms my heart that we received so much support from the community that will enable us to enhance the lives of some of the youth. In the spring, we are planning to have another event to raise money for the youth.”

More than a holiday celebration, the brunch underscored the organization’s core mission: mentorship, leadership development, and creating pathways to success for young people. Every ticket sold, every raffle entry, and every moment of fellowship contributed to a scholarship fund that will help shape brighter futures.

As guests danced, dined, and connected, the event honored the idea at the heart of the 100 Black Men movement—when youth see strong examples, they can envision strong futures.
