Morgan State Medical Laboratory Science Program Welcomes Forensic Science Leader Dr. Cinese Caldwell

BALTIMORE — On February 6, 2026, the Medical Laboratory Science Program at Morgan State University welcomed distinguished forensic science professional Dr. Cinese Caldwell for an engaging and insightful visit with students, faculty, and staff.

Dr. Caldwell currently serves as Deputy Director of Forensic Science and Evidence Control at the Baltimore Police Department and brings nearly 26 years of experience spanning crime scene investigation, forensic science, and public service. A proud Morgan alumna, she earned her Doctor of Public Health from Morgan’s School of Community Health and Policy.

Dr. Caldwell was escorted to campus by Lieutenant Kevin Bacon of the Morgan State University Police Department and met with Medical Laboratory Science Program Director Dr. William Anong prior to her presentation.

Following a brief welcome from Dr. Anong, Dr. Caldwell shared her professional journey and offered students an inside look at career pathways within forensic science and crime scene investigation. Her presentation provided a real-world perspective on the evolving role of forensic science in public safety and justice, while highlighting opportunities for students interested in laboratory science beyond traditional clinical settings.

Students were actively engaged throughout the session, posing thoughtful questions and participating in dialogue around career preparation, leadership, and workplace expectations. Dr. Caldwell emphasized that while technical expertise is essential in scientific careers, success is also deeply rooted in intangible skills often overlooked in formal training.

“Many of the lessons learned along my career journey were rooted in being cognizant of intangible aspects often characterized by the development of soft skills,” Dr. Caldwell shared. “Emotional intelligence, active listening, and communication are associated with growth, leadership, and development. While technical skills are paramount, how we interact and communicate with others directly impacts our ability to work effectively with stakeholders and serve the public.”

She also underscored the importance of integrity, accountability, honesty, and character, encouraging students to commit to continuous self-reflection and self-evaluation in both their personal and professional lives.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. Anong presented Dr. Caldwell with a piece of Morgan memorabilia as a token of appreciation for her time, insight, and continued commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists.

The Medical Laboratory Science Program at Morgan State University is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science and prepares graduates for entry-level positions in the laboratory workforce. Program graduates are eligible to sit for national board certification examinations to become medical laboratory scientists.
